Linda K. Reeves Therapy

Identity is a galaxy, let’s explore it together.

Despite the advancements in societal acceptance, the highly personal nature of gender identity and sexuality still tends to be broadly misunderstood, and for many individuals painfully experienced.

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

I am a licensed marriage and family therapist who specializes in LGBTQ affirmative psychotherapy. I’ve focused my education, training and certifications in order to provide knowledgeable, experienced and compassionate support to LGBTQ-identified individuals, couples and the family members who love them.

Here you will find a safe and secure space to pour out the contents of your heart and explore how to travel your distinctly unique journey. Therapy offers an opportunity to dive deep within yourself, examine your attitudes and beliefs, process distressing emotions, acquire new tools, and cultivate the courage to be authentically YOU!

Who Benefits from Therapy?

Therapy helps all who are affected when a child, parent, or partner shares information about their sexual or gender identity that was previously unrecognized or hidden. I work with individuals, couples, parents, partners, families, and adolescents who want to feel better and live more authentically.

Individuals

A note for transitioning clients.

For clients in transition, we will identify the ways you are resilient and bolster those strengths as you determine the right time to share the intimate details about yourself with your family, friends, co-workers, and others.

Together we will discover those displaced or suppressed parts of yourself and bring them into the light so that your personhood and self-concept can be integrated and whole, reducing the anxiety and depression that have become second nature.

If you are interested in exploring medical interventions, I can provide referrals to healthcare providers, and surgeons, and if necessary, I will write letters for you to receive medical services.

Partners & Couples

Paving a new way forward.

Learning that your beloved’s gender identity has changed can come as a shock that leaves you feeling devastated, isolated, and confused. The life you envisioned and the dreams you had for the future suddenly seem like a distant reality as you grapple with questions of how to move forward. Or you may have jumped into support mode, validating your partner’s reality, and championing the decisions they want to implement, all the while denying your own pain.

If you are beating yourself up for not knowing sooner, are struggling to accept your partner’s identity, or feel lost on how to move forward in your relationship, I can help.

My goal is to move you and your partner toward a place of deeper understanding and love so that you can support your loved one as they let go of the secrets and fear, and step into honesty about who they truly are.

Parents & Families

Restoring harmony in the home.

Family members often feel overwhelmed with mixed emotions of confusion, fear, anger, and loss. Parents often jump into support mode, hurriedly digesting information on how to parent a gender-diverse child. Or they feel uncertain about where to turn or what to do about the painfully distressing feelings they are experiencing. Because so much focus is placed on supporting their child, parents tend to overlook or minimize their own experience, which complicates and negatively compounds their ability to be an affirming ally for their child and to maintain harmony in the family system.

The presence of a therapist who is trained in LGBTQ-affirmative therapy will provide a stabilizing and affirming environment for family members that are struggling to adapt to any type of gender identity or other lifestyle change. If you are beating yourself up for not knowing sooner, wrestling with deeply held religious beliefs, are married to a non-supportive spouse, or are grieving the loss of a child you thought you knew, I can help.

Starting Therapy: FAQs

What is the goal of therapy?

The overall goal of therapy is to support you in creating positive changes that improve your mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing, as well as your relationships and overall quality of life. That means different things to different people, and the goals of your therapy will depend on you! We will discuss your goals during your consultation and first session.

Where does therapy take place?

I offer therapy to individuals residing in California. If you live outside of California, I offer parent coaching and partner coaching packages.

COVID changed the way many businesses operate, and I was fortunate to find that teletherapy worked well for my clients. As a result, and in accordance with my license, I currently offer teletherapy sessions to residents of California. I use a HIPAA-Compliant software platform called Simple Practice that makes it easy to log-in to our sessions from your phone, tablet, iPad, or computer.

Do you accept insurance?

I am not currently in-network with any insurance carriers. But, if you have a PPO insurance policy, they will likely cover a portion of your session costs, after your deductible is met. I provide a Super Bill at the end of each month that you can submit with your claim form to your insurance company for reimbursement.

How does payment work?

I accept credit card and Venmo at the time of service. We will go over my cancellation policy during our first session.

The challenge is to be yourself in a world that is trying to make you like everyone else.

About Linda K. Reeves

The vision for therapy practice came to life while I was in graduate school, as I learned about the ways our oppressive heteronormative and CIS normative culture impacts the self-esteem, agency, and mental health of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, gender non-binary, and queer-identified people. As the proud mother of a gay son, these dynamics were felt on a very personal level sparking a commitment within to find ways to lift up and affirm LGBTQ+ people and support their families in pushing back against culturally induced stigma and discrimination.

GOOD FAITH ESTIMATE: You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your mental health care will cost. Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services. You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.
